What is a mule?

A mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey. Specifically the mother is a horse and the father is a donkey. The type and size of mule often depends on the type of horse the mule had for a mother. If the mother (or mare) was a draft horse the mule will probably be very large whereas if the mother is a pony the mule will probably be fairly small.

Are all mules girls?

No, mules can be either male or female, just like horses. They are, however, typically sterile because donkeys and horses have a different number of chromosomes.

I heard mules are stubborn, is that true?

I guess that's open to one's opinion. However, if you really get to know your mule and understand them you will find that they are not so much stubborn as thinking. While you can intimidate a horse into doing what you want that is not often true of mules. They like to have time to think about what they are being asked and want to see value in what you want them to do.

Why are so many people starting to ride mules?

Most of the population is getting up in years and no longer want a rodeo style ride. Mules, by in large, are dependable, sure footed, hearty and not particularly spooky. Considering that mules come in all shapes and sizes what's not to love?

Can a mule compete in traditional horse activities?

Yes. In fact there are many mules which are competing in events such as dressage, competative trail, jumping, barrel racing and just about any other activity you can do with a horse.
